Something feels wrong. A bracket came loose. A wire is poking. You're in pain. Take a breath. Most braces emergencies are fixable fast. Here's how to figure out what's happening and exactly what to do.

Not every braces issue needs an emergency visit. Some things need us today. Some can wait until your next appointment. Here's how to tell the difference.
A bracket is the small square bonded to your tooth. They can break from hard food, an impact, or sometimes for no obvious reason. It happens.
Here's your action plan:
Most broken brackets are fixed in one quick visit. The sooner you come in, the less it affects your timeline. Remember: the first three bracket repairs during treatment are on us.
Your archwire can shift, bend, or poke out past the last bracket. It's one of the most common braces issues and usually one of the easiest to handle at home.
Brackets rubbing the inside of your mouth cause small sores. It's most common during the first week and right after adjustments. Annoying but manageable.
Soreness for 24 to 72 hours after an adjustment is normal. Your teeth are moving. That's supposed to happen. This is not an emergency, but we know it doesn't feel great.
If pain is sharp (not just achy), doesn't improve by day 5, or gets worse instead of better, that's not normal adjustment soreness. Call us.
Call immediately if you have:
We'd rather hear from you and tell you everything's fine than have you sit with a problem that's getting worse.
Oak Lawn Office: (708) 636-9000
Berwyn Office: (708) 484-8686
Hours: Monday–Friday 10 AM–7 PM. We answer emergency calls during business hours and can usually fit you in same-day or next-day. If something happens outside of hours, text us and we'll get back to you first thing.
A lot of orthodontic offices make you wait days or weeks when something breaks. We don't. Dr. Tahir and Dr. Lia keep emergency slots in the schedule because when something goes wrong with your braces, waiting isn't just uncomfortable. It slows your treatment down.
Most emergency issues are solved in one short visit. Bracket reattached. Wire trimmed. Wax applied. You're back to your day. That's how it should work.

Nope! A broken bracket slows things down by about a week, not months. We fix it as soon as you can get in and you're back on track. The longer it stays broken, the more it can affect your timeline. So don't sit on it. Call us.
Don't freak out. Small brackets pass through without causing any harm. Call us, let us know, and we'll schedule a replacement. This happens way more often than you'd think. You're fine.
Stick with orthodontic wax. It's softer and stickier than regular wax, so it actually stays in place. Keep a pack on you at all times. It's your best friend for dealing with sharp edges or irritation between visits.
