Foods to Eat and Avoid with Braces

You're not going on a diet. You're making a few swaps. The list of what you can eat is way longer than the list of what you can't. Here's the full breakdown so you know exactly what's safe, what's not, and how to make meals work with brackets on your teeth.

Foods You Can Eat (It's a Lot)

Most food is still on the table. You just have to think about texture. If it's soft enough to cut with a fork, you're probably fine. Here's the full list.

Proteins & Dairy

  • Eggs (scrambled, soft boiled, omelets)
  • Yogurt, pudding, ice cream (soft, smooth textures)
  • Soft cheese, cottage cheese
  • Tender meat (ground beef, pulled chicken, soft fish)
  • Beans, lentils, tofu
  • Milk-based sauces and soups

Grains & Carbs

  • Bread (soft varieties, dinner rolls)
  • Pasta (all shapes, fully cooked)
  • Rice, risotto, oatmeal
  • Pancakes, waffles, French toast
  • Soft tortillas

Fruits & Vegetables

  • Bananas, apples (cut into small pieces)
  • Berries, grapes (halved)
  • Melon, oranges (segments)
  • Canned fruits in syrup
  • Mashed potatoes, sweet potato
  • Soft-cooked carrots, broccoli, peas
  • Corn (off the cob - cut kernels off first)
  • Avocado, cucumbers

Treats & Snacks

  • Soft cookies (not hard biscotti)
  • Chocolate, candy (soft varieties)
  • Applesauce, fruit puree
  • Hummus, soft dips
  • Smoothies, milkshakes

What to Avoid

Short list. But it matters. These foods break brackets, bend wires, or get stuck in places you can't clean. One bad snack can mean an emergency visit and a setback in your treatment.

Hard & Crunchy

  • Raw vegetables (carrots, celery, apples—cut them up instead)
  • Nuts, popcorn, seeds
  • Hard candy, lollipops, jawbreakers
  • Ice
  • Hard tacos, chips, crispy cereal
  • Pizza crust (soft interior is fine; skip the crust)

Sticky & Chewy

  • Caramel, toffee, gum
  • Taffy, licorice, marshmallows
  • Peanut butter (thin with jelly is okay)
  • Dried fruit (raisins, dried mango)
  • Anything that adheres to brackets

The rule of thumb: if you have to bite down hard, rip with your front teeth, or chew for a long time, skip it. If it's soft enough that you could squish it between your fingers, you're good.

Tips for Eating with Braces

Cut Everything Smaller Than You Think You Need To

This is the single most important habit. Don't bite into anything with your front teeth. Cut food into small pieces and chew with your back molars. Your front teeth have brackets that are doing precision work right now. Let your back teeth handle the heavy lifting.

Chew with Your Back Teeth

Your back molars handle the toughest work. Front teeth with brackets are delicate, so only use them for smaller, softer bites.

Slow Down

Rushing is how brackets break. Take smaller bites. Chew carefully. It feels annoying the first week. By week two it's automatic.

Rinse After Every Meal

Water, swish it around, spit it out. It takes 10 seconds and clears most of the food that gets trapped around brackets. Brush when you can. Rinse when you can't. Always do one or the other.

Pack Smart for School and Work

Having braces-friendly food ready to go makes everything easier. Good options to keep on hand:

  • Yogurt cups or pouches
  • Soft granola bars (check that they're actually soft)
  • String cheese
  • Applesauce pouches
  • Bananas
  • Soft crackers with hummus

If it doesn't need cutting and it's soft, it's a good portable option.

Making Your Favorite Foods Work

You don't have to give up what you love. You just have to think about texture.

  • Tacos become taco bowls. Same filling, no crunchy shell
  • Salads get soft-roasted veggies instead of raw carrots and croutons
  • Pizza becomes the inside of the slice. Eat the soft part, leave the hard crust
  • Apples get sliced thin instead of bitten into
  • Corn comes off the cob. Same taste, no bracket risk
  • Burgers get cut in half and eaten in smaller bites instead of one big chomp

Most of your family's regular meals work with small adjustments. It's about texture, not giving up entire food groups.

Your First Week vs. Normal Weeks

The first week after getting braces (and the first day or two after each adjustment) is your softest-food stretch. Stick to:

  • Smoothies and milkshakes
  • Soup and broth
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Yogurt and pudding
  • Ice cream (yes, really)
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Applesauce

By day 5 to 7, you're back to eating most normal foods. The tender phase is short. Plan easy meals during adjustment weeks and stock the fridge with soft options before your appointment. Future you will appreciate it.
