Gaps Between Teeth: Treatment in Oak Lawn and Berwyn

Gaps between teeth are one of the most common reasons people come to us. Sometimes it's a single gap between the front teeth. Sometimes it's spacing throughout the whole smile. Either way, closing gaps is one of the fastest and most satisfying treatments we do.

But here's what most people don't realize: gaps aren't always just cosmetic. They can signal an underlying bite issue that's worth fixing while we're at it. Dr. Tahir and Dr. Lia will look at the full picture and tell you exactly what's going on. Your first visit is free.

What Causes Gaps Between Teeth?

Oversized Frenum

The frenum is the small piece of tissue that connects your upper lip to your gum, right between your two front teeth. If it's larger than usual, it can physically hold your front teeth apart and create a gap that won't close on its own.

Small Teeth in a Big Jaw

If your jaw is on the larger side but your teeth are on the smaller side, there's simply more space than teeth to fill it. The teeth spread out and gaps form naturally.

Missing Teeth

When a tooth is missing, the teeth on either side start drifting into the empty space. That creates new gaps and can throw off your whole alignment.

Teeth That Didn't Develop Normally

Teeth that came in smaller than average or didn't fully develop leave space where a full-sized tooth should be.

Tongue Thrust

If your tongue pushes forward against your teeth every time you swallow, that repeated pressure can push teeth apart over time and widen existing gaps.

Habits and Piercings

Pushing on teeth with your tongue or fingers, and oral piercings (especially tongue and lip studs) can create or widen spaces. The pressure is subtle but constant, and teeth move.

Why Fix Gaps?

Food Traps and Hygiene

Gaps catch food. Every meal. That trapped food feeds bacteria, builds plaque, and increases your risk of cavities and gum disease. Closing the gaps makes your daily brushing and flossing actually effective.

Chewing

Your teeth are designed to work together. Gaps interrupt that. Food slips through instead of getting chewed properly, which affects digestion and makes eating certain foods frustrating.

Speech

Gaps between front teeth let air escape when you talk. That can cause whistling sounds, a slight lisp, or trouble pronouncing certain words clearly. Most patients don't realize the gap is affecting their speech until it's closed.

Confidence

This is the big one. Gaps change how your smile looks, and that changes how often you use it. A lot of our patients say closing their gap was the single thing that made them start smiling without thinking about it.

How We Close Gaps at Cool Braces

Traditional Braces

Our go-to. Braces give us full control to close gaps precisely and address anything else going on with your bite at the same time. That's the advantage of braces over a cosmetic-only fix. Closing the gap is the easy part. The real work is aligning everything around it so it doesn't relapse.

Timeline: 6 to 18 months depending on how many gaps and how wide they are. Some simple single-gap cases finish even faster.

Braces close the gap by actually moving the teeth together. That's a permanent structural change, not a cover-up.

Invisalign (Mild Spacing)

For mild gaps with a solid bite foundation, Invisalign can close the spacing effectively. Clear trays, removable for eating, nearly invisible. It's a good option for adults who want something discreet.

For wider gaps or cases with bite issues beyond the spacing, braces give us more control and a more reliable result. We'll tell you which one your case actually needs.

Bonding (The Finishing Touch)

After we close gaps with braces or Invisalign, sometimes the teeth look slightly narrow because they've been spaced apart for so long. That's where bonding comes in. We add a small amount of tooth-colored resin to widen the teeth just enough to look natural and proportional.

It's the finishing detail once the braces have done the heavy lifting. Quick, painless, and done in one visit.

Frenectomy (If the Frenum is the Problem)

If an oversized frenum is physically holding your front teeth apart, closing the gap without addressing it means the gap comes back. We refer to a periodontist for a frenectomy, a simple procedure that removes the excess tissue. Combined with braces, this keeps the gap closed permanently.

We'll tell you at your consultation whether this applies to your case. Most patients don't need it.

How Long Does Gap Closure Take?

Depends on the gaps. A single gap between front teeth can close in as little as 4 to 6 months. Multiple gaps or wider spacing: 6 to 18 months. Cases that involve bite correction along with gap closure may take 18 to 24 months.

Those are general ranges. Dr. Tahir and Dr. Lia need to see your teeth, take X-rays, and evaluate the full picture before giving you a timeline that means something. You'll get that at your free consultation.

Gap Treatment for Kids, Teens, and Adults

Kids: Some gaps in kids are completely normal, especially while baby teeth are falling out and permanent teeth are coming in. Those often close on their own. The ones that don't, or the ones caused by a frenum or missing teeth, are worth having us look at. Age 7 is the right time for that first check.

Teens: By the teen years, all or most permanent teeth are in. If gaps are still there, they're not going anywhere on their own. Braces close them efficiently and we can address any other alignment issues at the same time.

Adults: Gaps don't have an expiration date for treatment. We close gaps in adults every week. Braces or Invisalign, depending on the case. A lot of our adult patients say they wish they'd done it years ago. The ones who come in now say they're glad they finally did.

What Should You Do Now?

Gap closure is one of the most satisfying treatments we do. Patients see results fast, and the confidence shift is immediate. Whether it's one gap or several, Dr. Tahir and Dr. Lia will tell you exactly what it takes and how long.
